While there have been many threats to the moon in the past, both in literature* and real life, it is generally considered by anyone and everyone with a vested interest in living on this planet, that engaging in any sort of lunar shenanigans is taboo. While I am aware that my opinion here might be in the minority (and feel free to disagree with me), I think it can safely be assumed that the moon incident is almost certainly accidental in nature. While we can't be entirely sure the full effects of the incident for a short while, I think it's safe to say we're all noticing the major loss of mass above us. Had that been deliberate, then clearly the threat would have been broadcast before hand, to allow us the chance to reconcile our difference with the theoretical villain.
Ultimately, it is my greatest hope that the moon itself is reconstituted in some capacity; as a man of the coast, ancestrally, it shakes me to my very core to imagine the fishermen of the past being affected by this travesty; My thoughts go out to everyone affected.

Gotta say, im thinking deliberate.
Summat like that, happens for a reason. Load of people with the power to make it happen if they wanted to.
Better question : who the fuck wants the moon gone, or worse, who just nicked it all for themselves? And what are they gunna do with it?

Who just nicked it all for themselves? Given we appear to not be talking about the vast amounts of debris raining down upon our planet, we must safely assume that it wasn't destroyed, yes? That then leaves open the possibility that it was relocated. Now forgive my lack of scientific backing, but I am led to believe that a displacement of that size would require a vast amount of energy. If it were to be relocated, the point of it's destination would also suffer a tremendous amount of damage from release of built up energy. As we have not heard about any recent catastrophic disasters other than the disappearance of a sizeable chunk of our lunar friend, we can safely state that this isn't presently Earth. I put the emphasis on presently, however, given anyone with an ounce of historic awareness will be able to point to at least one major, life destroying event in our past. You all know the one I'm alluding to, yes? Really? Is your life so full of excitement and suspense that you feel a few short paragraphs of well written prose took too much time, and sufficed a shortened summary? you're saying it's aliens? I'm not completely denying that Aliens MIGHT have been a factor, but see my response above as to what I ultimately believe to be going on here.

I'm also pretty damn sure anyone with the ability to nick the moon for whatever purpose they might have is capable of replicating the results of it blowing up.
Likewise we wouldn't get an announcement if they wanted to make it seem like an accident or it just went pop. That'd be counter productive and a half.
I'm leaning more to the idea that it was made to look like an accident, so we'd sit here and go "well, if it was a villian, they'd say" or try to work out why its an accident. Heck, maybe in a bit we'll get someone "claiming" they were responsible, or maybe they left enough clues that someone will "discover" the "cause".
There's certainly enough scapegoats in the world, and certainly enough people and organisations to make use of em. Discounting that is playing into their hands.

If the theft of the moon is deliberate we need to consider what the motives for removing a large portion of the moon could possibly be. As I see it almost any possible motive here falls into one of four categories:
1) They have some use for a large amount of moon rock 2) They have a use for a greatly diminished moon 3) They want to send a message 4) They wanted a challenge
Now I'm no expert but 1) seems unlikely as a motive for any terrestrials as it is hard to imagine where they would be able to store that much rock and equally hard to think of a use for it. If we consider extraterrestrials then these objections seem to disappear as space is plenty big enough to store most of the moon, seeing as it does in fact store the moon. The use also appears more reasonable as it could be used to construct some sort of planetoid. Anyone know of any homeless aliens who might want to recreate their world?
I won't speculate on 2) as my scientific knowledge is insufficient to do it justice but this could be the most worrying theory.
Theory 3) seems quite convincing to me. Someone, or something, is making a show of power. The lack of any communications or anyone taking responsibility might seem to disprove this theory but it could be that the message is not intended for us, the general public, but rather for someone in particular, someone already familiar with the culprit perhaps?
Theory 4) is perhaps my favourite though. Someone did this just to see if they could, to test their skill and see if it were truly impossible. This explains the lack of any follow through and seems to me to fit the mind set of the sort of person who would steal the moon, surely the action of an extraordinary person (and not just in the sense of having super powers)
What do you guys think?

Not really, but wouldn't that be cool? Would explain why no-one seems to know where it's gone. Like, you can't just hide a billion tons of rock under a rug somewhere

Wonder I any of these theories were discussed at the summit, would be awesome to think we are helping them!

you know, i think someone did it just cos they could... you know, wouldn't you? if you could just look up and go 'hey i think the moon should be smaller' wouldn't you do it just for the hell of it?
of course the worrying part is if they then think 'hey i think the earth should be smaller to match' but... let's hope they don't do that.
