Oh, like hell is he going to give away YE secrets - even YE secrets fabricated specifically for this purpose - for the sake of Max Byrd's pristine, alabaster abs, coyly half-hidden beneath the folds of his t-
Dammit.
As he makes to vocalise this, or at least to express his general indignation, he notices Eileen. Eleanor. Ellen?
"Ah- Amy?" He stands, reaching out just in case she doesn't stop in time.

Emily doesn't react to Daniel's outburst, and continues dancing until Daniel's outstreched palm brushes against her forehead. As the robin nibbles at Daniel's fingers, Emilys wide eyes open, staring up into those of the older boy. Emily breaks into a delighted smile, and her cheeks flush a brilliant scarlet, until they match the plumage of the bird on her head.

"Friend of yours Daniel?" Max is lounging again, propped up observing the two half collide half dance into each others arms.
"If they are otherwise occupied Mia, we could try taking this elsewhere again. Unless you want to continue this here, with them?"

Daniel has a general habit of smiling at awkward people. Not when he's in a crush-all-people mood. But, when he's participating in a civil conversation, he tends to work out who's overly quiet, or looking left out, and to smile at them - just to indicate that he hasn't forgotten that they're there.
It is with more or less this sort of intention that he beams right back at Emily. "Careful."
Then Max chimes in, and things slide inexorably towards crush-all-people. He turns, moving so he's adjacent to Emily, but still slightly in front of her. "And why exactly is that any of your business?" To Mia, arbiter of all disputes, student councillor of justice: "Well?"
(He will remain utterly nonchalant, should the robin decide to perch on his fingers. Or his head. Such things have ceased to bother him.)

Mia's eyes dart from face to face - from pissed expression, to wryly indulgent, to blushing nineteen to the dozen (and seriously? What it is about her brother that makes him basically catnip to all, er, bird lovers?) - as she attempts to take stock of the situation. Which - wow. Okay. Yeah. Max has managed to wreck literally everything.
Hence, lying through her teeth is no longer as valid an option as it once might have been. Mia takes a moment to lament for the lost days of yore, before saying, very deliberately: "Daniel. What do you know about Kelly Moon?"

Incredibly, Emily blushes even redder at Daniel's single word, her elfin eyes growing impossibly wide as they gaze up into his. The robin also stares transfixed, its beady attention contrasting sharply with the dreamy stare of its perch. Emily opens her tiny mouth as if to speak, and then closes it again with a little squeak. She is saved from another attempt at words, first by Max and then by Mia. She steps back slightly, letting the conversation flow past her, almost as if she is waiting for permission to speak, though whether that permission is sought from those around her or from her own floundering imagination is hard to tell.

He rolls his eyes with all the indignation at his disposal. This is a significant amount of indignation. Then- pauses. "...One moment."
Very purposefully, he turns. He spares Amy (it is Amy, right?) a backward glance and an apologetic smile. "Sorry for disturbing you. We can vacate, if you'd like?"
That done with - and without waiting for an answer - his expression modulates back into a scowl, and he deigns to give Mia a reply. "She shows a little favouritism towards YE students, now and again. That's hardly a crime. Now what exactly do you think you've stumbled upon?"

Mia gives him a long, searching look. "That is entirely dependent on what Max is about to say." A beat; a longsuffering glance in her associate's direction. "Assuming he's willing to take the time off from equivocating in order to say it."

He sits up, roughly pulling his shirt down, suddenly all business observing the interplay between the siblings, and the newcomer. Max can't help the snerk at "a little favouritism" but as the conversation rolls around to him he sobers again.
"It's the trading card game, the entire thing is a money spinning scam, I found the finance log books in the library and..." He pauses, cocks one head to the side and looks at the door, or through it. "does anyone else hear that?"

Even as Emily tries, and fails, to muster up the courage to actually speak to Daniel, the robin perched on her ponytail becomes extremely agitated. Emily reacts instinctively, and scampers back the way she came before anyone can even begin to wonder what just happened. {continues here}

Max gets up from the stage and pads across the room softly after Emily, he stops at the doorway and looks out, watching her disappear around the corner and listening to the commotion down the hall.
After a moment he pulls his head back into the ballroom and shuts the door. "Probably nothing to worry about, and one less distraction."
