Hah. Clearly Mister India lacks the strength of conviction to call her ludicrously transparent bluff. (Though doubtless Headmaster Marshall could be brought to see reason. Even Mia's embroilment in Student Council politics fails to outstrip that of her teacher, and the head has made his policy on extracurriculars known.)
Mia tilts her head to one side, questioningly. "That... would be a little more convincing if I hadn't been here first. With all due respect, sir, you appear to be the one with a rather unhealthy interest in being present for my, er, monologues."

"The only reason I'm here is because I was walking past the Library and all I could hear was the sound of your incessant wittering. Now will you observe the rules of not just the school but society in general, or will I have to get the Librarian involved?"

Mia’s expression would best be described as ‘politely baffled’. “Sorry, sir. The rules of society in general involve… what exactly? Victimization of innocent teens? Or secretly smoking in the teachers’ lounge when no-one is ostensibly watching? I tend to get confused about these things.” Five terms as Hall Monitor have their perks, so far as information goes.

"Libraries, Miss Mulholland. And the not talking within them," Mister I smiles at Mia's attempt to get him to back down, but he knows he is in the right, "And while we're on the subject, attempting to blackmail teachers into doing what you want is most certainly also against school rules. Even moreso that outbreaks of arguments in the Library."

Mia stares at him, levelly. “This is not an attempt at blackmail, Mister I. I’m merely acknowledging the deficiencies in your position as role model. Though I might add that there is in fact no such provision within the school rules. Another thing the Student Council ought to rectify.”
She makes a genuine mental note of this.
“In any case, if you want to report me, by all means do so.” A thought strikes. “In fact, definitely do so. Right now. This instant. This degree of insolence definitely merits detention. I would certainly put me in detention. Arkady too.”

"Yes, I'm sure you would love to be put in a detention together..." Mr I remarked, before taking out his notebook, "But no, I think this write-up will instead be going to the staff meeting. I'm sure they will be thrilled to know what their Student Council members are really like."

Oh, for the love of –
Why must he halt this shoddy, ill-fated investigation in its defective tracks before they’ve even had the chance to get started? It’s not as if she wants to martyr her stellar academic record for the sake of garnering the slightest piece of information on this mysterious Cabal, but needs must.
“Sir,” says Mia, urgently. “You do not want to do that. I know you want to salvage the Student Council just as much, if not more so, than I do. Write me up for detention. Please.”

Mr I smiles internally. Gotcha.
"If you don't want me to do that then maybe you should spend a little less time arguing with me and a little more time obeying the rules. Are we clear?" he says, looking down at her.

Mia stares incredulously, before remembering to school her expression. As it were.
Surely he cannot believe she thinks he would hold the entire Student Council to ransom over a grudge. But then, perhaps that’s the point. Honestly, it’s getting a little difficult to tell.
“Apologies, sir,” she says, carefully. “I don’t know what came over me. I shall endeavour to control my temper in future.” A pause. “For clarification, though, I definitely do want you to do that. As in, write me up for detention. It is imperative that you do so. For the sake of – discipline. And such.”
After all – where better to locate experienced cheaters than in detention?
Though perhaps not particularly successful cheaters. Huh.

Mr I smiles, externally this time, "Very well. This time, I shall make it just a detention. But I'll be keeping an eye on you." He rips a detention slip from his notepad filled with the time and location of the detention, hands it to Mia and turns to leave but first nods under the table at the bag of books adding, "And would you kindly inform whoever left their detritus lying around that as soon as I find out who they are they shall be the first joining you."
(Exit Mr I)

Mia accepts the slip, gratefully. Really, unhelpful abuse of authority notwithstanding, it's enough to make one believe that he's on her side after all. Probably. Potentially. Maybe. It's just so difficult to get a read on that man. A quick glimpse at the clock proves that she has better things to be doing than contemplating the volatility of her not-quite-allies. Or at least not this particular ally. Arkady seems to have disappeared god only knows where, so it looks like she's conducting this particular cat-herding scheme solo, for the time being. Bundling her things together, she begins the long ascent roof-wards once more. [continued on the roof]

[Continued from the Theatre complex]"Well, here we are..." Eva said, her tone reflecting the slight awkward air between the pair of them as they walked across to the library. Still she was smiling, hovering by the library door.

Ellie quickly located her bag and hauled it up onto her shoulder before heading back over to the door, "I am sorry about that, Eva," she said, looking a bit embarrassed, "I don't really know why I forgot I left it here!"

Eva shrugged, smile gentle. "Because you cared about Emily. No need to be embarrassed... though I still stand by my comment from earlier..." She winked.
